I am Coming Quickly
Revelation 22:12
And behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
The book of Revelation talks a lot about the things that would happen in the last days. One of the things that are repeated in this last book of the Bible is the phrase; ‘I come quickly’. This week, we will meditate on this word and its implications. Why would the Lord keep repeating something throughout an entire book? I would say it is to emphasize its importance. We will proceed with our study under three headings:
- What Manner of Lifestyle?
- His Reward, in His hand
- Are You Ready?
What manner of lifestyle are you leading?
The return of the Lord to a lot of Christians is an uncomfortable topic. It is as such pushed to the recesses of our minds while we carry out the business of daily living. However, the Bible warns us not to get carried away by the business of life and forget this important fact.
2nd Peter 3:10-12a says ‘But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation (Lifestyle) and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God’
This scripture is clearly saying that the children of God should be looking forward with hope to this glorious day. We should be handling the affairs of life as people knowing that these earthly things will ultimately be destroyed. Why are we then afraid and uncomfortable at the mention of the Lord’s coming? Could it be because we are not ready? Are we still holding things in our lives dearer than our most precious gift –eternal life? Maybe like the man whom Jesus asked to follow Him, we are saying let me first say goodbye to my family (our own reasons could be; I want to be married first, I want to be successful). Some people are just afraid deep down that they might not be ready when the Lord comes.
The Lord says ‘If you are truly looking for that hope, I will see it in the way you live your life. You will live holy knowing you have to be ready. You will not be fixed on material things that you can no longer use the day I call you home. You will see all resources you have as belonging to Me and you will use them as I direct you - for My glory’.
His Reward in His hand
Revelation 3:11 says ‘Behold I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown’.
Many people do not realise that the most precious possession they have is their salvation and eternal reward from God. The devil does not mind you having riches, power, position as long as he can make you unaware of this truth and then steal your ‘Treasure in earthen vessel’.
Therefore Jesus says; hold tight to your salvation, cling to the Holy Spirit’s teachings and leadings. Do not allow Him to be silenced by the matters, voices and challenge of this age. Seek your God while He may be found. Sit yourself where you will hear Him and pray for grace to be able to follow Him for no man can attain except by this grace. He however requires you to seek Him, ask Him and avail yourself of His grace.
Are You Ready?
This is a question every man must ask himself. No man can do this for you. Are you afraid of the Lord’s coming? Maybe there are issues you need to sort out with the ‘holy one of Israel’. Are you ‘busy’ with the business of living? I could remember of how I felt sorting out my mother’s possessions after she had died. Some articles of clothes and jewellery were still brand new which she had never used.
Whatever category we find ourselves, we all need to ask God to birth the reality of heaven in our hearts afresh in order to see with eyes of God what truly is important.
Remain blessed and highly favoured.
